Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Glow Sticks:

What are glow sticks and how do they work?

A glow-in-the-dark stick produces light through a chemical reaction known as chemiluminescence. Typically, hydrogen peroxide (activator) is added to a solution of phenyl oxalate ester (oxalate) and fluorescent dye that determines the color. Each glow tube contains an activator that is stored in a small glass capsule separated from the remainder of the glow material. As you bend a glow stick to make it glow, you are actually breaking the ampoule from the small glass ‘activator,’ which releases the light and starts the reaction. By shaking the stick, the mixing process can be accelerated.

Glowsticks last for how long?

There are many different sizes of glow sticks. The size determines the duration of the glow. Miniature glowsticks, such as those 1.5 inches to 3 inches, can last between 2 and 4 hours. Lights can last up to 12 hours on glow batons with much more glow material. Typically, a 6 inch light stick will glow for about 8 to twelve 12. Glowing sticks that use powder as one of the activators can last for up to 24 hours.

Glow sticks have a shelf life of how long?

Glow Sticks have different shelf lives depending on the environment in which they’re stored. To extend the shelf life of the light sticks, keep them in their original packaging and store them in a dry, room-temperature environment. It is generally recommended that Glow Sticks be stored at room temperature for 3 to 5 years. Additionally, size determines how long a product can be stored. Normally, smaller glow sticks have a shelf life of 1 to 3 years; larger glow batons (6 inches and longer) have a shelf life of up to 5 years if stored properly.

Glow in the dark sticks: how do you activate them?

To start the process of lighting up a stick, you need to mix up the glow materials. When you bend the stick, you crack the internal glass ampoule containing the activator. When you hear the inside ampoule break, shake the stick vigorously to properly mix the liquids and start the reaction.

Is a glowstick affected by temperature?

Certainly. A glowstick will glow more brightly but for a shorter time when heated because the light-emitting reaction is sped up. A colder temperature causes a dimmer glow, but the duration is longer. Despite this, the glow stick may freeze if it is very cold, below-freezing temperatures, which will reduce the illumination.

Can you put a Glow Stick in the freezer to prolong its life?

You can temporarily ‘pause’ the glow reaction by placing an activated Glow Stick in the freezer. When you remove it from the freezer and place it in hot water, the chemical reaction will continue and the Glow Wand will begin to glow again. Do not reheat your stick by microwaving it after freezing. The lighted stick may melt or explode as a result. Reheat frozen glowsticks only by using hot water.

Are Glow Stick chemicals toxic?

There are no toxic chemicals in the Glow Sticks we offer. Despite this, removing the liquid is not recommended since it can irritate the skin and eyes. In the case of getting liquid in your eyes, you should immediately rinse them with cold water. In the event that irritation persists, consult your doctor.

Is it okay for glowsticks to be used in the water?

Yes, The glowsticks are completely waterproof and are used for swimming, nighttime fishing, diving safety, and emergency situations.

Is there a difference between a premium brand and a standard brand?

Premium Brand Glowsticks come with a higher concentration of glow mixture, thus providing a longer-lasting light effect. Generally, light sticks of premium brands will brighten for 12 hours, while light sticks of standard brands will light up for 8 hours.

Which are the brightest Glow Stick colors?
